Volcano Apoyo -
An article written by one of our Ecology students. ¨After swimming and dinner, Jeff McCrary, Ph.D. gave my favorite
lecture of the entire semester. He is a passionate, intelligent environmentalist with long disheveled brown hair
and common clothes.¨
Apoyo Spanish School -
¨The most luxurious place I stayed in Nicaragua was the school at Laguna de Apoyo, Proyecto Ecológico.
It is a small place, with a wonderful cook, which is both a school & a research station.
It is run by a very entertaining man from Tennessee named Jeffrey,
who also teaches at the University of Central America in Managua.
I was very impressed with my teacher at Proyecto Ecológico. I had gotten discouraged with the other school because
I felt that the teachers (except for Nubia) did not have training enough to be really useful for the more advanced
student. I was a little reluctant to come to another school, but I had met Jeffrey while I was in Granada & he
knew his most persuasive argument would be a visit to the school so he brought me down there for dinner.
I knew it was a lovely place so I figured it would be nice even if the teacher wasn't very good.¨
clandybar -
And yet another! ¨It is quite an amazing place as the laguna is actually the crater of a volcano and measures up to 200 metres deep in places.
The Projecto Ecologico
offers Spanish classes and spearheads conservation of the area. So in addition to learning Spanish, we got
to live in the forest and get a pretty good intro to the flora and fauna as well as the issues affecting the area.¨
offexploring -
Mariposas y mas!¨The lagoon itself is about 20,000 years old and sits in the crater of a dormant volcano. The guests
here are a mixture of college students
doing placements, interested birders or butterfly enthusiasts, and people wanting to dive or learn spanish.
We´ve been here for four nights; Sarah has been learning Spanish each day and
I´ve been doing a bit of relaxing, diving and helping out. I´ve done one or two lessons too.¨
kazphil -
Two students blog about Apoyo Spanish School-culture, politics and language!¨Karen learnt much about Nicaraguan history,
festivals and national symbols;
along with grammar, verbs, verbs and more tenses of verbs.
Phil learnt verbs. Phil got frustrated learning verbs and not being able to say what he wanted, particularly when your teacher is
trying to conduct a conversation on political history!
(I would´ve been more content reading ¨Run Spot Run¨)
But that said Phil can now read and write a little better and Karen can engage locals in political debates on street corners
(yeah, like Karen´s the sort to incite political uprisings!)
The Laguna was Phil´s FIRST FRESHWATER DIVE!! It´s a crater lake that has been isolated for all history, and so has only eight species of fish (one of which is introduced) and only one species of plant (Charcha).
How did the other 7 species get there?
Thorn Tree-Lonely Planet Review of Laguna de Apoyo Spanish School -
Definitely a nice change after town scene of Matagalpa... very vacation-y spot w/ lake, monkeys, birdsongs. The
language school is housed in a biological/ eco research center run by a Nicaraguan non-profit, and also serves as a hostal.
Most of the language teachers were Nicaraguan scientists (each with a particular specialty- local fish, birds, flora, moths and
butterflies, etc) who conducted research when they were not teaching Spanish. The Spanish school provides critical funding to support
their local research.
