White-throated Magpie-Jay Calocitta formosa
The White-throated Magpie-Jay Calocitta formosa is loud and gregarious, making it among the
birds of Nicaragua that most visitors remember most. The "hurraca", as it is called locally, is always visible patchy forest areas
in Laguna de Apoyo Nature Reserve, and is common throughout the Pacific region of Nicaragua. Beginner birdwatching enthusiasts
love them, because they are active into the middle of the day, when other many other birds are quiet.

White-throated Magpie-Jays are close relatives to the crows (Family Corvidae), and very intelligent,
as birds go. This bird was rescued as a chick and raised by the staff at Estación Biológica, and was released as soon as he could
take care of himself. He
now lives in the forest, but visits people often. Photo by Trolls Hollengren.
The upperparts of this fledgling White-throated Magpie-Jay are mostly gray, unlike the bold
blue of the adult. Photo by Stephen Beekhuis.
The White-throated Magpie-Jays are members of the family Corvidae, the just as the crows,
and they can be bold and intelligent. Photo Anne Sutton.
